Single use (disposable) inflatable packers are available in a number of different designs. We mainly distinguish between:
A) Inflatable single use packers with steel core which have rubber hose with steel cord.
B) Single use inflatable packers made of aluminum where the rubber hose has a textile cord.
GMA's single use packers are all equipped with a so-called "burst-plate" (also called a pop-off valve), a membrane inside the packer that, until a certain burst pressure is reached, causes the rubber hose to be filled with preferably water to the required expansion pressure* be reached.
These packs are also equipped with an internal non-return valve with the function to maintain the size and internal pressure in the rubber hose when the so-called pop-off valve releases (burst).
GMA also has a front non-return valve on all disposable packs, either G/C version or GX version. This non-return valve is what maintains the injection material after completion of injection in that the injection pipe/hose is detached from disposable packer.
* Expansion pressure: For more information see Inflatable reusable packers, in short it is the sum of pressure required to expand packer to the right size plus withstand planned injection pressure as well as any water column in boreholes, all multiplied by a safety factor.
Inflatable disposable packer with steel core and rubber hose with 2-layer steel cord.
The packer is expanded using water before grouting takes place, grout is recommended not to be used (if grout is used, Water/Cement ratio must be very high, otherwise the pop-off valve risks bursting before the hose is fully filled). Furthermore, it is recommended that relatively low flow rates are used while the packer is being expanded in the drillhole.
Regarding dimensions, the smaller model, 855-40-80-300 has a center tube in 20x4mm material (bore 12mm), while the larger model 855-55-90-270 has a center tube in 34x4mm (bore 26mm) and 855- 85-130-400 has a center tube of 30x3mm.
Regarding the working area, the smaller packer 855-40-80-300 is recommended to be used up to Ø64mm drillholes, the model 855-55-90-270 up to Ø76mm and the largest model 855-85-130-400 up to Ø130mm.
855-40-800-300 and 855-55-90-370 are supplied with a C-tip as a standard check valve in the front of the packer, but can also be supplied with a GX check valve in the front. Model 855-85-130-400 has a GX check valve as standard.
We can also supply the two smaller steel packs with an extra non-return valve at the beginning of the flow pipe on request/need (sometimes used in combination with chemical injection). This extra non-return valve should not be mixed-up with the non-return valve that is always present in the flow tube to control inflation of the hose. It should be noted that if an extra non-return valve is installed in the flow pipe, the flow on the 855-40-80-300 model is reduced to 5mm, and for the larger model 855-55-90-270 the flow becomes 10.5mm.
On the largest packer, 855-85-130-400, the male part of the new quick-release spring coupling is shown, which enables the injection hose to be detached from the packer remotely. See more about this under Sprint Quick Coupling (Accessories and Couplings).
Packers manufactured for use in conjunction with TBM machines, or where drill string, at a later stage will drill away packers. Also used where packs risk getting stuck so they have to be drilled out.
Center tubes, nipples, clamp sleeves and centers on GX check-valves are made of aluminum. What still is made in steel on packers are parts of check valve (center on G(C) tips, alternative washer on GX model) but these parts are small and not considered to affect TBM head or drill bit. The rubber hose used on these packs has a textile cord which is also easily grind down.
Packers can be supplied check-valves either of G (C) models or GX model.
Below are some of the standard models we have, more variants are available on request both regarding diameters and lengths.
